    SUMMER ASSOCIATES

BLACK McCUSKEY’s Summer Associate Program seeks to provide on-site work experience for self-motivated, dedicated, scholastic achievers who want the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge in a corporate law firm atmosphere.

You’ll Be Treated Like A Colleague

"The thing impressed me the most, was that I was treated like a colleague from day one, working with partners and associates not for them." - Bob Preston, Summer Associate 2003

Designed to mirror the demands and expectations of our first-year associates, BLACK McCUSKEY’s Summer Associate Program provides direct interaction with partners and associates from day one. In addition to legal research, our past summer associates have had the opportunity to assist our attorneys in:

    · Writing Appellate Briefs

    · Drafting various Pleadings, such as Motions for Summary Judgment, Motions for Federal Court, and Motions for Bankruptcy Court

    · Trial Preparation

    · Attendance and Assistance at Trials

    · Drafting Releases

    · Drafting Estate Documents

    · Drafting Corporate Formation Documents

    · Actively participating in all seven Practice Area Group roundtable discussions

    · Attending client conferences and counseling sessions

    · Participating in Client Development activities

You’ll Be Supported By Attorneys & Staff

"The program at Black McCuskey far exceeded my expectations. I was impressed with the attorneys and staff. It was a wonderful work experience." - Robert Murphy, Summer Associate 2003

Summer Associates at BLACK McCUSKEY are provided with their own office, a computer, their own secretary, client development and marketing support, technical computer support, in-house library support, and Westlaw access. In addition, the Stark County Library is conveniently located next door to BLACK McCUSKEY’s Canton Office.

Our compensation is commensurate with the salary for first year associates and is extremely competitive. Additional compensation for living expenses and free parking in an attached parking deck is also offered to those students participating in our program.

Our Summer Associate Program Is Non-Competitive

While BLACK McCUSKEY’s interview process is extremely selective, we pride ourselves on promoting a non-competitive work experience for our Summer Associate law students. Our goal is give both the student and the firm the opportunity to learn about each other prior to making permanent hiring decisions. We typically hire between two to three summer associates. It is not our practice to hire more summer associates than available associate positions. We value your expectation to be offered a position as an associate at BLACK McCUSKEY should your performance meet our expectations.

    We Balance Work With Fun!

BLACK McCUSKEY is committed to professional and personal growth. We encourage our Summer Associates to participate in networking programs with our clients, as well as several social outings during the summer including:

    · Blossom Festival Concert

    · Lunch/Dinner at Glenmoor County Club

    · Firm Luncheons and Golf Outings

    · Cleveland Indians games with Terrace Club privileges

    · Associate Outing at an Akron Aeros game with lounge privileges

    · Several Dinners hosted by Firm Partners and Associates at their homes

We currently conduct on-campus interviews at Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University and the University of Akron, and on occasion the University of Pittsburgh, Cleveland Marshall College of Law, Indiana University and the University of Cincinnati. However, we always welcome the opportunity to meet with law students who have strong academic and personal backgrounds.

For consideration for a Summer Associate position, please forward your resume to Brian R. Mertes at bmertes@bmsa.com.
